THE AMA FOUR - BOARDMEMBER SPOTLIGHT

Meet Britney Simone – A Marketer with a Creative Soul and a Winding Road

(1) When did you know you were made for marketing?
Britney’s path to marketing wasn’t a straight line—it was more of a winding road and that’s what makes it so good. Her childhood dreams included being a singer, a Broadway performer, or even a veterinarian, but advertising always held her attention. “I loved commercials,” she recalls. “I found it fascinating to engage with people and encourage them to make choices through creativity.”

Her professional life began in the performing arts before she transitioned into sales—a move that showed her the deeper impact of marketing. “In every sales role I had, I found myself creating my own sales enablement tools,” she says. “None of the companies I worked for had marketing support, so I started doing it myself.”

Today, she thrives on the unique mix that marketing offers: “It’s the perfect synergy between creativity and data. I have a scientific brain and a creative heart, and marketing allows me to play in both spaces.”

(2) What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

“The best advice I ever got came from my mother. She told me I could do anything—no matter where I came from or what my background was.”

This advice has guided Britney not just through her marketing career, but through life. Britney has time and time again tried new things without fear of failure and a just do it approach. And she knows her work – which her mom paved the way for -is not done.

“My mom broke glass ceilings in her time, and I thought by now they’d all be shattered. They aren’t. But I’m proud to still be breaking them for the next generation.”

(3) What advice would you give your younger self?

“I’d tell her to give herself more grace. Young Britney was so ambitious—smart, passionate, a hard worker—but often to her own detriment.”

Like many successful women, Britney admits she sometimes held herself to some impossible standards.  Striving for perfection and some hard-earned life lessons showed Britney that perfection can be exhausting and that her path didn’t need to be straight to be successful.

Today, she would tell herself and others that, “Life isn’t easy, but that’s OK. Success doesn’t have to look like what you expected at 20. I’m proud of every version of myself—23, 30, 35, and now almost 40.”

(4) The Fun Fact

Britney’s creative roots run deeper than many marketers — Britney is a classically trained opera singer and musical theater performer. Today she is producing and starring in Let’s Summon a Demon at Debbie’s  by Brandon Monokian, an Off-Off-Broadway dark comedy about “friendship, identity (crisis), and the price of unfinished business.”

In addition, when not tapping her vocal cords alone, she’s helping others find their voice. Britney has been part of the Astoria Choir for 13 years and serves on its board of directors.  The choir – a non-profit choral organization in Astoria, Queens – offers three concerts a season.  According to Britney, the choir made NY feel like home when she first came here.  And like so many of us in the NY area, this home became family.
